My public relations and cause-marketing career unknowingly began in the third grade when I submitted a short story to the editors of Daisy, a national magazine of the Girl Scouts of the USA.
A few months later, a large package arrived from the magazine’s New York offices. Inside, I found three copies of the November issue and a handwritten note from the editor thanking me for my submission. The epic, 200-word story of “Turk the Turkey” had made me a published author at the age of seven. I was officially a celebrity at Concord Elementary School.
The story involved a turkey “eavesdropping on the conversation” of the owners of a family farm where he lived and the farmer’s plan to spare Turk’s life by purchasing a store-bought bird. It wasn’t Shakespeare. But it did deliver a simple and clear message. Even if you’re a small, family run business, you can still do good works.
It was also a valuable lesson on what editors are looking to publish.
Today, as founder of Schumacher Creative, my team helps corporations and foundations craft their giving messages. We also assist non-profits with their strategic messaging and marketing campaigns. We look forward to helping your
organization with its communications needs.
